Next-generation precision horticulture — combining wireless sensors, smart actuators, and intelligent software to optimise plant growth at any scale.

Project Overview

The Automated Plant Growing Systems project is a new initiative by Virtual Workgroups, building on years of experience with the GutterGrow vertical growing system, Smart Intelligent Pipes, and wireless sensor networks. The goal is to create a fully integrated, intelligent growing platform suitable for both domestic and commercial horticulture.

System Components

📡 Wireless Sensor Network

  • Soil moisture, temperature and humidity sensors
  • Light level (PAR) monitoring
  • Nutrient solution EC and pH sensing
  • Battery-powered nodes, solar-chargeable
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity via ESP32

⚙️ Smart Actuators

  • Automated irrigation valves and pumps
  • Nutrient dosing control
  • Grow-light scheduling
  • Ventilation and climate control outputs
  • 12V low-power design — solar compatible

💻 Intelligent Software

  • MicroPython firmware on ESP32 / Raspberry Pi Pico
  • Data logging and trend analysis
  • Alert notifications to phone or PC over Wi-Fi
  • Web dashboard for remote monitoring
  • Open-source, extensible architecture

Research Locations

Development and trials are conducted in collaboration with horticultural research partners. Previous work includes trials at NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany) facilities.

Current Status

This project is in active early-stage development. We are currently:

  • Designing the sensor node hardware and enclosures
  • Developing the MicroPython firmware base
  • Evaluating growing media and crop varieties
  • Seeking collaboration partners and co-funders
